What is progressive scan video? Quite simply the electronic equivalent of film production. Having produced 16mm and 35mm film for over 15 years, I know what good film looks like. Having shot BetaSP video for almost a decade, I know what video looks like as well. Progressive scan has changed everything. With the SDX-900 camera system, a complete progressive scan image is produced for each frame in either 30 or 24 frame modes. In tandem with the cine-like gamma curve, we can now shoot video with the high quality look and feel of 24p film production.
A review by Christopher Bell, Cinematography.com
The SDX900 offers video professionals the ultimate in image acquisition flexibility. This camera is the very first broadcast-grade standard definition field production camera/recorder to offer 24 frames per second progressive scan. It also supports both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios. The SDX images are truly film-like, and cinematographers can finally deliver high-end images on shoots where the budgets are too tight for film.
Director Virginia Bogert commented that 'While sitting in edit online at Flying Spot, it was gratifying telling the seasoned editor that the spot was shot with the new Panasonic SDX-900 and hearing him say, "Gosh, I thought it was film!"'
But like any new imaging system, the new camera by itself isn't enough. Producing a film-like image requires film-like discipline. The skills developed in our years of film experience, most notably in lighting and camera technique, are serving us well in 24p production.
This isn't a rental: we not only acquired the camera system, we also put in the studio decks and conformed both of our Avid suites for 24p. This is a major step in technical complexity from standard video, and we're trained, checked out, and fully experienced in every stage.
Progressive scan is changing the face of high end production, and Inflight has it today. To see or hear more, or to take a look at our full demo package, just give us a call.
